BADASS: Spades & Grenades - Playing Cards with Balls
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/2146143533/badass-spades-and-grenades-playing-cards-with-ball/
$10 early bird, $9 international shipping
$12 middle bird, $9 international shipping
$14 regular, $9 international shipping
"extra decks" are $12 each, $6 international shipping

$10,000 goal
USPCC printed
The suits are non-standard. Spades, Grenades, Stars, and Skulls ... I *think* they're sort of pretend equivalents to Spades, Hearts, Diamonds and Clubs (in that order).
All the cards are one-way ... front and back.
The project is run by the same people who came up with badassoftheweek.com and the Badass con carne cartoon.

I think this is a really cool and original project.  I don't know if I'll pledge for it, but I have a strong feeling this will go over big - and draw more traffic to their website as well.  The idea is absolutely brilliant - it doesn't matter if this deck breaks a lot of playing card design conventions because the theme behind it is just that solid.  Bravo!

The artwork is great, I'd buy it just for that.  I don't like it as a deck, and i don't really understand the theme for each suit, but I like the idea of having 52 bad asses to call on. :)

I think the theme is pretty sweet, as well. And the art looks pretty great. But God Almighty, I hate unconventional suits. I don't see the point in them and never will.

No self respecting Badass would allow a heart to be placed next to their name. It made them feel like a Valentines day card, so they insisted we change it to something that suited them (see what I did there ;) From there it kind of snowballed into Skulls and ninja stars. We figured the deck was already unconventional and we wanted to go for the stylized feel of a deck of 52 hardcore badasses throwing down skulls and grenades.

Besides, you have to admit that Spades & Grenades is one hell of a memorable title.

Thanks for the promo Allison, if there is anything I can do to help spread the word, just let me know.

perhaps you could design a badass card game to play with the deck.  Honestly, I'm not a fan of the back of the card :(  I get it, but it doesn't really reflect the art of the deck, if anything it lessens it a bit as it's not consistent with the rest of the art work.  But yes, Spades and Grenades is a good name, you could have a follow up deck called Aces in Spaces.  :)

I think the back is fine the way it is!

Welcome to the board Kegatron!  Are you one of the creators?  Even if you aren't, you should pop over to the Introduce Yourself topic and say hello to the gang while letting us know a bit more about yourself.

The artwork is great, I'd buy it just for that.  I don't like it as a deck, and i don't really understand the theme for each suit, but I like the idea of having 52 bad asses to call on. :)

You can't look at this like a traditional deck of cards.  The suits, as has been mentioned, are only slightly-modified versions of existing suits, not totally unique and alien designs.  The grenades almost look like hearts, the ninja stars are definitely diamond-like and the skulls have three holes where clubs would have three leaves - and they're vaguely club-shaped, to boot.

As I said, it breaks many conventions of card design, but there's a solid reason behind doing so - and there's enough still there to make this a perfectly functional deck.

Introduced myself a little bit on the forum, but yes, I am one of the creators of the deck. Specifically the designer of the horrible back art ;)

I realize the deck is not everyone's cup o' tea, but we just wanted to make something that would speak to Geeks, Troops, Nerds and Bikers. It's a difficult demographic to please, but my partner has been doing it for years now at www.badassoftheweek.com with his historical accounts of Badasses. Incidentally, I draw the comic Badass Con Carne on the same web site in case anyone wants to mock me.

We just hit our stretch goal for the project, so EVERY card will have full color battle-posed Badass artwork. This is more of a work of art than your standard deck I think, so hopefully the Skulls and Grenades can be forgiven ;)

Also, a quick question to Don and Alex, since I have now seen your names on pretty much every post ;)

This is my first deck, and yeah it was more of an art project than deck design, but I am now 100% enthralled at the idea of designing decks. I would like to get some specific advice from you guys, maybe off the forums, as it seems you have all the lingo and tricks down to a science.

Thanks

You may not have noticed my signature - I do consulting for deck designers.  I take someone new to the art form and discuss certain elements of design that make up a deck of cards - it's a little surprising how many people want to make a deck, but they design something that looks as if they've never seen one, never mind used one!  Of course, like any rule of design, you can break them - but you only do so for good reason.  For example, it's a "soft" rule of playing cards that you design a deck with a two-way back design - it looks the same when turned 180 degrees.  It's a soft rule because that's one of the rules that people will break to the benefit of the design.  The rule is in place because a novice card cheat can use it to identify cards when dealt - if the whole deck is turned one way but the courts and Aces are turned the other way, you'll know immediately when you're dealing high cards (or if you switch that to the 2-7 spot cards, you'll know the low cards in a low or high-low game).  Beginning magicians will also use the same feature to their benefit.  But sometimes, the design calls for it, and it just fits.  I will say, however, that a one-way back will be significantly less popular than a two-way back - some collectors avoid them completely - the design must be strong enough and compelling enough that people will want it regardless.  THAT'S why it works for your deck, big-time.  Also, since your whole deck is one-way, you can make the backs so as well without any problems.

Beyond that, I give people some of my insight into the marketplace, most specifically as it applies to the "card community" - around here, that's magicians, collectors, flourishers/cardists and the occasional poker player.  We don't exclude poker players, but most of the serious poker players want just one kind of deck - plastic, bridge-sized, durable, with traditional faces and two-way backs.  It's a narrow market niche and custom decks like this send them running for the hills.  Now, if you're talking about "neighborhood poker nights", that's a different story...  :))

I've assisted with Kickstarter projects before, most notably with Uusi, a Chicago-based design firm.  They produced three decks on Kickstarter - I met them when I backed the first one (Blue Blood) and worked with them on the next two (Bohemia, Royal Optik).

Send me a PM with a phone number and a good time to call and we can talk, if you like.  I'm a night owl - I work graveyard shifts in Manhattan, off on Wednesday and Thursday nights.  Most times I can call from work, if it's quiet - it usually is.

You'll have to be more specific when you ask questions from "Alex".  On Discourse it is the default name for any awesome and totally bad-ass person, so of course there are lots of us.

By the way, feel free to call yourself Alex Kegatron as your Bad-Ass design is pretty freaking awesome. :)

Are you certain it didn't print yet?  "Newtsgames" is online retailer Newt's Games at newtsgames.com.  Retailers who bulk-order a deck outside of KS will usually get their decks in a drop-shipment from USPC, meaning they get their decks about the same time as the creator gets his or hers.

On the project page, the project closed on August 15th of last year and was updated as being at the printer as of December 3rd.  It would be a record fastest turnaround for USPC, but it's not impossible.

Either that, or Newt's been running from deck topic to deck topic, posting the same fluff post about having the deck and thinking it's great because he wants people to buy them from him...  :))  Newt - what's the story?  'Fess up.

I would think he is spamming.

Latest update below.

Hey everyone, I know things have been a bit quiet around these parts over the holidays, but since the printers took a two week break we decided it was best to hunker down and get things set-up as best as we can. I'm happy to say that everything was approved for the cards and they should have begun the printing process on January 2nd, 2014. This means we will have the decks in 6-8 weeks and we will begin shipping immediately.

Well, I'm pretty sure I have the deck at the office.  I'll have to check on Monday.  I don't open a lot of the decks when I get them and just add them to my collection.

Don, as for the comments I've made about some of the decks, I guess I see a lot of comments on here and they are often negative so I was trying to give my thoughts.  Especially if I liked the deck.  BTW, I do NOT have them in bulk.  Any of the decks I've bought off Kickstarter so far have been for my collection.

Yep, guess you are trying to be a "d!K"!  I did not say anything about the "quality".  LOL.  What I said was...
"Nice job.  Artwork is very colorful."
I was commenting on the artwork...which I still think is very cool.

Sorry I wasted my time here.  Guess the trolls are everywhere.  The point still is, they did an awesome job.

Well, you definitely can't have the deck because the creators haven't even received it. It's always good to give your point of view on decks, but the topics you've been posting on have mainly had positive comments about the deck, not negative. So what gives?

He's not trying to be a troll, Newt.  He's just got a well-tuned BS detector.  You stated you had the deck and that it was a "good job" (indicating you've seen the finished product) when it's clear that you didn't.  I was playing devil's advocate, posting possible explanations, but the update from the designer that the deck hasn't been printed yet would clearly show that your statement about trying the deck out was incorrect.  I'd give you the benefit of the doubt that it was inadvertent - you made a mistake, we're all human, just have a good laugh over it and move on.

OK, people, move along, nothing to see here, move along...  These aren't the droids we're looking for...
