  • Pick a card, any card...no, not THAT card!

  • Facebook:
I received a PM from John B. earlier tonight, which I copy here with his permission:

Hello Don, So I noticed how you mentioned you had a ton of decks so I thought I might ask you advice on something. Do you know of any good military related decks. I have a really good friend who was just deployed and was interested in sending him some that him and his battle buddies could enjoy not only for their card games but for the deck as well.

I thought it was a very good topic to share, since I'm sure most of you know someone in the military and that many of those people are probably deployed outside of the US, perhaps even in a less-than-friendly location.  For over a century, playing cards have been a soldier's best friend in the field.  USPC even manufactured a "patience" deck (miniature-sized) under the brand name "Cadets" specifically for soldiers to take into combat - the smaller size made them very portable and easily stowed, and this was in the days before cargo pockets became military-standard.  That deck, however, has been out of print for a good while now!  Here are the suggestions I gave John.

If you can still find them around, the old Bicycle Big Gun reprints can usually be had for about $5 a pack.

Jason at the1eyedjack.com carried a full line of these decks, five in total, for each branch of the military - all that remains is Air Force and Army, though if you hunt around you'll probably find the others.  The quality is on par with a pack of Aviators or US-made Streamlines.  All the pips are rank patches and pins, to help you remember the ranks of the various officers and non-coms a soldier runs into daily.

If course, there's the Bicycle Tactical Field deck.  These were actually designed for the military - the colors chosen for the backs and the reds on the faces allow you to play with the deck under "red-lens" conditions.  Tactical transports often use a red light for the passenger areas at night because it allows for faster adaptation of night vision than if a soldier were to transition from white lights to total darkness.  The standard military-issue flashlight comes equipped with a removable red lens as well for the same reason.  They come in black and olive drab with Rider Backs and a much darker shade of red, comparable to what casinos use for their decks.  They're rumored to be more durable as well - the card stock is heavy, probably Bicycle Casino before they stopped offering it.
Bicycle Tactical Field deck at BMPW

I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the Wounder Warrior Project deck, as well!  It may be only fifteen cents donated for each deck sold, but it's better than nothing, AND the court cards are wearing digital-camo versions of their normal attire.
Bicycle Wounded Warrior Project deck at AceKing on eBay

While not specifically designed for such use, these decks would also likely be red-lens playable like the Tactical deck, as they either use green or a darker shade of red for the red suits and are of a generally "camouflage-y" color scheme - all are from AceKing's eBay pages:
Bicycle Eco Edition
Bicyle Rejuvenate - 6 decks, good price!
Bicycle Elephant Tsunami deck 3-pack (2nd ed. w/blue seal)
Bicycle Twilight

If you wanted to send a VERY special gift, depending on your friend's branch of the military, it would be hard to go wrong with this - though it's not really meant for using in the field.  Considering they were made in 1981, it's a mighty fine deal for this set, and they're probably the last Army and Navy decks made - both brands were among the first group of brands Russell & Morgan started with when they created what's now known as USPC - they predate the Bicycle brand:
100th Anniversary Army-Navy two deck set

You can always think of more durable cards, like these - but shop around for better prices:
Bicycle Prestige two-deck set red/blue

And from the same factory (Fournier in Vitoria, Spain) came this little beauty!  They're not so easy to find these days, but they're made the same way as the Prestige using the same plastic:
Karnival Death Heads from a UK eBay seller

And along the lines of the most durable decks out there, consider anything Bee Casino grade or perhaps Ellusionist Masters decks, in red, blue and Shadow Masters.  Other good choices for durability would be Richard Turner Gold Seal Bicycles and Professional Bicycles from CARC.  In fact, all the decks CARC ordered from USPC are Bee Casino grade.

If anyone here has any more suggestions or simply wants to write about their soldier buddies (or their own playing-card experiences while deployed, if you're a solider, sailor, Marine, etc.), I welcome your posts here.

How about T11 Guardians- Not necessarily a military deck, but the name kind of says it all.
Last night I stayed up late playing poker with Tarot cards. I got a full house and four people died.

Personally I have never like that deck. I feel the box is a bit more durable so they could be good there.

Yeah, but that might be a little hard to play poker with, unless you like everyone getting five-of-a-kind...  :))

That would have been a military deck in Biblical times...  Not everyone goes for religious themes, though personally I'm a fan of the deck.

I figured with the history of the ace of spades deck, it would be something they could enjoy. I am sure they could find something to do with it. One or two of them do a bit of magic so....

I hope this doesn't come off as pandering, because honestly a good 50% of our readership at Badassoftheweek.com is active and ex-military. So based on that alone, I can saw with some certainty that we have a deck made with the soldier spirit in mind currently on Kickstarter. I won't say more about it.

It's a good idea - when the deck is actually printed!  But what if someone was deploying tomorrow or next week - what deck would you think is good for them under those circumstances?

BTW: an occasional subtle plug is fine, as long as you don't make a habit of it somewhere other than your deck's topic!  And it would be bad form if it was in someone else's deck topic - this doesn't happen to fit that description, though.

I was given several decks while serving in the Army on various deployments including desert storm all standard military issued.  To be honest, I hated those decks, most were aircraft or vehicle recognition playing cards and others that were similarly educational.  Having served in combat I wasn't at all interested in military or war types of cards, I would have been more interested in ones that reminded me of home.

There has to be some old school pinup ladies deck that would go over well.

Googling "pin up deck" gives you some... varied results, so search careful ;)

Pin-up decks would be pretty cool - but depending on where you are, they might be considered offensive or illegal, and thus would be contraband or at least not something you could take off-base.

I'd say a great gift for a soldier fed up with the military style decks would be a plain old pack of Bees or Bikes combined with a deck clip or box of some kind that's made of metal.  Bees in particular would make great cards because of how sturdy the stock is.  The metal clip/case would be icing on the cake, protecting the cards under adverse conditions.  Alternately, an Otter box that's barely bigger than the deck would be great - keep the cards free of sweat, water, dust, etc. and sized small enough to fit in BDU cargo pockets without eating too much space.

You could jazz it up a little and send him out with a current issue custom deck or something, but the basics are something all his buddies in the field will know and enjoy.  If you did go custom, I'd stick to a custom deck with standard faces, like most of what T11 puts out, or maybe some Crowns or NOCs or whatever else HOPC has with standard faces now.  Nothing black and printed to the bleed, though - those edges will look like shit fast and he'll want something more durable than that.  Even a good casino deck would do, if you can find one that uncanceled and without Tech-Art faces - those aren't so easy to find these days unless it's a gift shop deck and the quality on those will possibly not be as high as the stuff used at the tables.

One thing that is widely popular with military guys are standard faces but unit designs or special service on the back of the cards (and maybe a modification to the Ace of Spades).  I've carried coins for years with the unit insignia, my patches always served to show my service awards, still it's cool to have cards too.  (I chose two that related to my own service)

Um, your images are TINY.  They appear to be 1x1 GIFs - a single pixel each.  And there's about 40 bytes each.  Really small.

I've heard of painting on a piece of rice, but this is ridiculous.  :))

Sorry, I was wearing my reading glasses. :P  Images have been added to my previous post.  FYI - I couldn't find the deck I had for 2nd BN 75th RGT so I substituted with 1st BN.

Hey, those are Zazzle decks!  The quality leaves a bit to be desired - Kevin showed me a few he did as tests for designs he wanted to make.  I suppose they're adequate for poker, but any pack of Standard Bikes would outperform them.  And they're bloody expensive, too - you could buy two bricks of Bikes at a big-box club retailer for only slightly more than a single Zazzle deck...

It was more for reference on what kinds of decks a soldier deployed would appreciate.  From 1990 - 1991 I went through 4 decks playing hearts and spades in a Saudi desert and they actually looked as worn as the 82nd Airborne deck.  Plastic is better than paper when faced with field conditions.  But, if my son were deployed, I'd probably go on Zazzle or MPC and make him a quick deck of cards with his unit crest on the back.  MPC is now doing plastic.  It costs more than I'd normally pay for a deck, but it's more personal and it'll be a one of a kind (or two because I'll have to keep a spare in case he loses his first one).
