Really smart work Jackson, nice to see your process.  You know your brushes ;)   And don't sit still for long.  Awesome stuff

Speaking of brushes, I actually only use one brushes for all of my work in photoshop. I call it "12" its 12 pixel wide and its a simple round brush thats standard in photoshop.

Regarding the first design...

Jackson, are you trying to invent a new kind of one way backs?  :)

nothing both Paul and I have shown as of late is what we are working on together. Paul and I are working through a few really great ideas, we are taking our time and letting it come together. Our styles are very different so it is very interesting to see how they meld together. I probably speak for both Paul and I when I say that our collaboration is mostly about leaning and soaking as much info  from each other as possible, "iron sharpens iron".

As for D&D, I have had a few great conversations with them both about working together and also just getting to know each other. This world of cards and card designing seems to be getting smaller and smaller and I like it that way.

My avatar is from Chinese bank note. I'm drowning myself in incredible art and mostly art from the east to get a breather from western currency. I'm trying some new ideas and designs, but nothing really yet that I want to share ;)

"Iron sharpens Iron" - I like that. Don't sharpen each others Irons too much. :)

One PS brush?  Wow nice one.  Must be a fair amount of illustrator in your details too.  Love the eastern art, so much flair.  Be nice to see where you take it.

I had some time tonight to start from scratch again and try some more pattern driven designs for my Kings Wild Signature Series. I've been pushing my bank note line work more modern lately for a fresh change. Trying to use more geometric shapes rather than engraving.

I like the first one much better. This one has too much going on and the black dots in the negative spaces attracts more attention than it should.

Good word, lol you should have seen mine first one. :) Talk about busy?

Here is a more toned down version

You were totally right Froggo, I like it much better without the black dots!

Absolutely LOVE that middle one!

I think that is shows off the linework the best. It's kinda obstructed in the first one. I don't think the diamond pattern is necessary in the third one either.

This just keeps getting better and better!

It's amazing how small changes can result in such big differences! Loving these designs, keep revised/new concepts coming Jackson!

I also avoid Illustrator like the plague! I still run Freehand on my Mac. They haven't updated since Adobe bought them out, but it's still head-and-shoulders better than Illustrator, in my eyes. As long as they keep making patches for Freehand to work on newer Macs, I'll keep using it! Most of my work is all Photoshop though. I like Photoshop's Path tools quite a lot.

Great Back design Jackson!

thanks, Randy

I really like the top one. It looks like a v3 Magic Con Deck.

It reminds me of the newly released Bicycle Madison deck (shown below). I prefer the last one much more.

Really?  'Cause there's only two versions of the Magic Con deck...  The first of the three cons had no deck to go with it.  :))  (You know I'm just having some fun with you...)

I had some time to sketch out my thoughts on the King of Spades.

Overall appearance - really gorgeous.

Those facial features - absolutely frightening!  At first glance, he looks like "that creepy uncle!"

I like that you amped up the level of facial detail, but to make some realistic details while leaving others more symbolic/traditional kinda makes my brain slip a gear.  I'd say make a more realistic face.  The recent trend, which I like, is to go for younger courts - when you think about it, many people back in the days of royalty really were young when they held their office because they simply didn't have long life spans.  But even if you want to keep the traditional, older look, that's fine - just either scale the details up or down, not in-between like this.  Give him a real beard and hair, with color, something that you might actually see in a portrait.  The skin can remain white, that's fine - perhaps you can "warm up" his expression some, though.

Nothing like getting my chops broken by a fellow New Yorker. Yes I know about the two magic con decks. Do I assume you knew that I was insinuating this new design should be the third?

@ Jackson:

You put court cards like that on the back design I picked of the three, you can forget about a signature series. That design blows away every deck you've made to date. Talk about an instant classic. People know how picky I am... That will become my second Kickstarter backer along with Royal Optik.

That has got to be one of the classiest court cards I've ever seen.

I do agree that the face could be improved on, but the rest is freakin COOL.

I put together some more studies, really focusing on the designs and how they look in fans. I also adjusted the King just a bit, I made him a little younger and not so ugly. Let me know what you think, I labeled each image so you could point out each design easier. Thanks guys for you input.

My favorite is A1

Just as a single card back, I like the B1 best. The A1 does have a great fan effect though.

I'm agreed here - it's a matter of deciding if you want a more classic and classy look or really impressive fans.

What would the back look like if you made it a smaller, repeating pattern, akin to the Bee Diamond Back?
