http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/897082388/can-eh-diana-deck-of-playing-cards?ref=card

Quote
A Canadian themed deck of cards featuring top Canadian magicians as the court cards, and other symbolic Canadian icons throughout.

I have been a deck collector for quite a while now, and have yet to find a Canadian deck that isn't filled with stock photos of scenery (basically a souvenir deck).   So, having combined that fact and my passion for playing cards, I have designed a deck of playing cards with a Canadian theme.

The deck will feature maple leaves instead of the the typical spade suit.  The suit colours will be two shades of red (bright red, and maroon), instead of red & black like in a typical deck of cards.

The most customization for the deck can be found on the court cards.  I have featured nine world famous Canadian magicians.  They are (in alphabetic order):

Bill Abbott

Very poorly put together. Minimal effort. Court faces are disproportional and simply look glued on. I can however see the card back going somewhere if its refined.

International shipping for 2 decks= 40$. wat.

Lastly, check out the Queen of Diamonds. I'm honestly not sure what to think.. That has got to be the most derp looking card i have ever seen. period.

Disclaimer: No hate, these are simply my observations.

Derp is just a term for "duh", a very ignorant term .. Have you heard of Mr Derp from South Park? ..

  • Ugh, I wish I had money for THAT deck!
Red lips and long hair does not convince me that that queen is a female. I can give them props for attempting to fully customize the courts but I don't think they were trying to go for a male "queen." Yet another deck that falls under the category as "fodder" in my opinion.
"The magician takes the ordinary something and makes it do something extraordinary. Now you're looking for the secret... but you won't find it, because of course you're not really looking. You don't really want to know. You want to be fooled."

I'm just surprised that a fellow magician would leave out Lee Asher.  He's technically American but he's based out of Toronto, where he lives with his wife.

Yes, the art is flawed, but as a novelty it's not a bad idea.  But by appealing almost solely to magicians and card collectors, he's sharply limiting his potential customer base.

I wasn't hating the deck until it got to sports.... Other than hokey and curling, is Canada known for sports?  And basketball could arguably be considered invented by ancient mayans using the cut off the head of your enemy rules.  I'm all for Canadian pride but I would rather have seen the suits themed:  Comedians, Magicians, Atheletes and Scientists and then make the Jokers a Hockey Player and a Curling throw...  I think that would have drawn a much larger audience.  Just my opinion, and we all know what opinions are like...

A magician made the deck.  He chose nine magicians from Canada.  He had three leftover faces - he chose what many guys, including magicians, like: sports.  Aside from Canadian football, three of the most popular sports in Canada would be exactly what he chose.  At least he left out curling...  I'm just surprised that he left out magicians like Lee Asher and Billy the Kid.

He left out, quite possibly the most famous magician to come out of Canada, Dai Vernon!! And he's left out Jay Sankey

There you go.  I forgot that Dai Vernon was a Canuck.

Ice hockey, curling, women's soccer/football. Not the first thing to come to mind, but there's also skiing and skeleton.

I would love a really well done Canadian themed deck, too bad this isn't quite it. As others have said, the back isn't too bad, it has potential but the art could use some more work and refinement. I would rather that the court cards not be catered towards magicians and be more representative of Canada. Even though the international shipping rates are insane... I must say it is nice to see a deck say "free Canadian shipping", even if it is for a deck that I won't be pledging for.

My guess is that you won't be the only one.  It's a shame; this is the first-ever Canadian deck on KS...

Can-eh-diana

So I have the distinction of being the only person able to back a project on CL so far. I was able to back Phil's project for an early bird

This back pic is from the KS project that Phil tried last year.

Last night I stayed up late playing poker with Tarot cards. I got a full house and four people died.

Same deck as last time - so same topic.  Merged.

I remember not being a fan of it back then.  Haven't seen anything to convince me otherwise.

There is something wrong with that queen face, it's kind of funny,  ;D The backs look okay, they could be better though. Although I am not familiar with Canadian magicians I am sure many other people are, so I am guessing they may like this, if only for the "I know who that is factor".
