I've always been fascinated with the U.S.S Constitution aka Old Ironsides since childhood. I think over the course of my life I have built and not finished about three models of the ship. I also have been a huge fan of naval paintings, in particular an artist by the name of Tom Freeman.

I have also been studying the "old masters" or the classic playing card decks of history and really fallen in love with the Bicycle Wartime series and most specifically the Dreadnaught deck. This is my tribute to both the deck and the U.S.S Constitution. I think that I will produce this deck eventually but It was a very refreshing creative process.

  • Ugh, I wish I had money for THAT deck!
As we've already seen, you can put out some impressive art on a deck of cards. I'm not much of a history or a ship person but I do like the look of the tuck and back design as is. Good work once again. :)) Do you have any idea what you're going to do with the faces?

Look forward to seeing more!

eventually? Is tomorrow eventually?
Last night I stayed up late playing poker with Tarot cards. I got a full house and four people died.

I would like to do some more research and try to replicate what ever faces the Dreadnaught deck had on them. So if any one with some good ref images please let me know. I didn't even really find a real pic of the original tuck just an old advertisement poster with an illustration of the tuck.

The Victory Series (a.k.a. The War Series) were all made in 1918, for only a few months - it's why they're so rare today.  The Great War ended too soon so the concept was dropped after the Armistice was signed.  I can't say this with authority - though I could find out - but I believe this deck would've had the Bicycle standard faces in existence at the time.

You should get this deck in the pipeline for early May distribution - in time for Fleet Week.  (Fleet Week does coincide with Memorial Day weekend, right?)

You're talking in the New York area right? I think so. I know in San Francisco it's in October. :))

Introduced in 1918.  (Red and blue.)  This is one of the four extremely rare World War I back designs. They were only issued for one year and few complete decks are known to exist today. The other three designs are Big Gun, Flying Ace, and Invincible.

Two sites that card collectors should be familiar with...

I guess it's a different week in cities all over the place.  At least the ones with harbors...

They were even more rare that that.  They released them I think in the spring of 1918, and because of the war being over, they were gone before the Christmas Holidays - on shelves for barely more than a half-year.  Aside from intentional limited-edition runs, it's probably the shortest run of any general-issue USPC deck of their own product line made to date.  I doubt it went through more than a single printing.

Thanks for posting those site URLs - those two are indeed valuable resources for anyone collecting vintage decks.  Plus anyone having anything to do with vintage collecting would be a fool not to join 52 Plus Joker.

This isn't the design thread. So, is this deck planned to be produced soon?

Interesting tuck case and backs. Court cards?
