Last night I stayed up late playing poker with Tarot cards. I got a full house and four people died.

The guy is very well-intentioned, but this is the prizewinner for the lamest KS project home page I have ever seen.  One paragraph of text and a low-res video that isn't even a minute long?  Seriously?  Could you try any less?  It's like he's phoning it in 'cause he couldn't be bothered to get off the couch when his stories are on.

  • Ugh, I wish I had money for THAT deck!
Y'all motherfuckers need Jesus.

Sums up the project fairly well I think. Effort doesn't seem to be a standard any longer in designing playing cards. You can't just bank on the theme of the deck to sell.

Is it self-righteous to play poker with a salvation deck?  To be honest, I think a religion based deck, perhaps one based on The Devine Comedy by Dante would be awesome.  "The path to salvation is through hell" and all that.  I think the guy is well intentioned, however didn't bother doing any research prior to launching.  He has not backed any projects (which I think should be a necessary requirement) and this is his first project.  I'll reach out to him and see if we can't come to Jesus on this. :)

Someone tried that same theme about Dante's Inferno recently on KS.  I can't recall if it succeeded or not.  Too tired to look.

Yes, Inferno from Faro Playing Card Co.  It make slightly over it's goal of $10K.  But that was specifially about the characters of the story of Inferno by Dante.  I liked the artwork on that deck but that was more specific to the book.  I think this designer should consider something similar but more in line with his theme of Salvation.  Perhaps the court cards could the be stations of the Cross or something  else religiously Iconic.  perhaps base the base the courts on the 12 apostles and their stories.  There is a lot you could do with a faith based deck.  The problem is that KS may not be the right market for them.  Perhaps he should sell them to the Gideons and get them inserted into Hotel rooms.

It wouldn't be the first time a deck was created as a result of religious preferences.  The card game Rook was invented as an alternative to playing games with playing cards - the inventor was a religious man who frowned on gambling and felt playing cards were too closely associated with the practice.

What on Earth were they thinking? Do people really think that they can just pull any image they want from Google and then pretend it's theirs? It actually makes me a bit angry. Here's an appropriate smiley.  >:(

Not the first time, not likely to be the last.  There's a few projects floating around now that push the boundaries.  Those two monster decks based on Universal's movie monsters are probably next in line for this type of challenge, since neither obtained rights from the studio.

So far, the biggest disaster was Bicycle Army Men.  Adam Clarkson got sued or something, presumably by the IP owners of the plastic Army Men toys.  Combine that with a tactical mistake - spending some of what he assumed would be profit from the project before its completion - and the entire thing collapsed under its own weight.  Clarkson at least took the trouble to refund his backers, which by now I think he's completed.

This project, at least, stands a chance of returning if the creator opts for either work he has rights to or a public domain piece.  Whether it stands a chance of succeeding is another story altogether.  But I get the feeling that this project will die at this stage - the creator didn't put much effort into this in the first place, probably expecting a quick payday when the project closed and only interested in doing the least amount possible to get it done.
