Lloyd Banes, creator of the forthcoming Moonshine deck, stopped in and let us know a few tidbits about his deck.  Most relevant: this first print run of 10,000 will not have custom faces, but a future second print run might, along with upgraded boxes.  Some of this first run will also be a "Midnight Edition" which he gave no details on...

Either Guy Himber changed the deadline on his Freakies deck or I wrote it incorrectly - the KS project closed about two hours ago at $1,495 pledged on a goal of $8,500.  I think this deck was hurt by a near-total absence of promotion for it - I haven't heard anything from Guy on the forums since around the time the project started.

Frost reported finding a link that stated the Bicycle Truth Garden No. 03 deck would be out "on the seventh day of the Lunar Calendar" or words to that effect.  The eve of the Chinese/Lunar New Year was Sat 9 Feb, with the day falling on Sun 10 Feb - I guess this means that either late Sat 16 Feb or early Sun 17 Feb it will be available.  From where, I do not yet know...  If you do, drop me a line!

Kickstarter project "Hero Decks" failed to reach its goal when it closed about two hours ago, raising $614/$7,500.

KICKSTARTER PREDICTIONS

I think I'll make this a regular feature - a weekly review of where things stand and my predictions for where they're going.

ENDING THIS WEEK

• Wed.: Tavern Cards - less than two days to raise about $900.  Not impossible, especially as funding surged by +400 yesterday.  I think it will make it, but by the skin of its teeth.

ENDING NEXT WEEK

• Mon. (late Sun. in US/Canada): Vixa - doesn't stand a chance.  Funding is practically at a standstill, the same pace it was from the start.

• Thu. (late Wed. in US/Canada): Bicycle The Hedge - funding slowed a good deal on this shortly after hitting their goal.  Assuming no promotions or other factors giving this a bump, I'd predict a close somewhere under 150%/$12,000.
• Thu.: SiShou - Four Beasts - while I think it would be criminal for this deck to fail, it will at its present rate of funding, even factoring in a late boost.  It's been averaging about £50 a day recently and with 17 days to go is just short of halfway to the goal.  Perhaps the fact that funding is in GBP rather than USD is an issue for potential investors - we have seen so far just one GBP-valued project succeed, Dicecards, and that deck has little appeal in the card community.

ENDING IN 3+ WEEKS

• Thu. 7 Mar.: DFC - I give it low odds.  It's moving very slowly out of the gate.
• Sat. 16 Mar. (late Fri. 15 Mar. in US/Canada): Ace Alcohol Education - very unlikely.  Slow pace of funding combined with outrageously high goal work against it.
• Wed. 27 Mar.: Yellow Lotus - already made its incredibly, unbelievably low goal.  When decks like this succeed and decks like SiShou languish, it makes me wonder what's wrong with the world...  I have no clue how high this will go, simply because I never thought it would get this far, this fast.

Also on KS, Tavern Playing Cards just smashed through their goal with just under a day remaining.  Now's the time to jump in if you want 'em!  Congratulations to Hannah Lipsky.

We have a soft shipping date on the Virtuoso deck - USPC will ship to the Virts sometime in the last week of March.  I would estimate from there an arrival date of somewhere in mid-April, plus or minus a week.

The SurrealScapes deck launched on Kickstarter today - it's a gorgeous deck and definitely worth a lot, especially since it isn't your run-of-the-mill custom deck.

Also on KS, Tavern Cards had a successful closing with $5,704 raised on a goal of $5,000.

Bohemia, Bicycle Genesis and Bicycle Medusa are shipping - moving them to the 2013 Releases list.

On a disappointing note, FedEx utterly destroyed the package containing the Medusa uncut sheets, rendering most if not all of them in some state of damage.  USPC will not reprint them due to the small amount of sheets (relative to the size of a deck print run).  Kai Nesbit's working on a solution and is foremost interested in making disappointed backers who pledged for uncuts whole in one way or another.  One thing being considered is to go through the uncuts to find the ones with only minimal damage, shipping them with extra decks, but judging from the photo posted of the decimated package, there will not be many of those to be had.  Suddenly, this has become probably one of the rarest uncuts on the market!

Sorry for the late report - today's report is more of a "36-hour" report, as will be my next post, coming late Friday/early Saturday.  Happy Valentine's Day, everyone!

Xiaowo Chang graciously came by to become a member and it's now known that Bicycle Truth Garden No. 03 (black) will come out on Saturday 20:00 "local time" (which I'm assuming for now is China).  This would be 12:00 UTC and 07:00 US/Canada Eastern.  Poor Western Time Zone...4am... 

He also showed photos in the deck topic of Bicycle Truth Garden No. 04 (white).  No word on the release date for that - I'd love to see them release simultaneously.  Oh, and did I mention that only 850 BTG3s will be available for sale outside of China?

More news on Bicycle Truth Garden and the release date/time: it will be on sale today at 8pm China time - in China ONLY.  The rest of the world will get a crack at buying them later this month, time TBD, from aloysstudio.com, operating in Malaysia.  It's unknown what country Aloys will ship from.

Two new Kickstarter projects: New York Lights and a magician's gaff deck called the Mirror deck (a double-facer deck with USPC standard faces to match most standard USPC decks and the front and back of each card is the same value/suit rather than a different face).

Merz67 sold a "rare" Bicycle Tie Dye 2 deck of his own design on eBay Thursday evening so I'm putting that deck on the releases for 2013.  You can check out the now-completed auction here.

Congratulations to The Department of Design - their KS project for the Founders deck is now $2K over the goal and climbing only a few days out of the gate.

At $2,055 pledged, Joaquin Burgos canceled his "Yellow Lotus" KS project about a half-day ago.  The update with the details is for backers only - often a bad sign, because the designer felt he had something to hide from the general KS public.  I've heard on the topic about it here from BiggerDee, who did back it, that Burgos claims that his printer is no longer offering uncut sheets (wha?) and since he had many backers for uncuts he felt he had no choice but to cancel.

WEEKLY KICKSTARTER PREDICTIONS

Well, I called it this past week on the Tavern Cards - let's see how my other predictions are doing, while I make some new ones...

ENDING THIS WEEK

• Mon. (late Sun. in US/Canada): Vixa - doesn't stand a chance.  Funding is practically at a standstill, the same pace it was from the start.  Prediction is unchanged.
• Mon.: Forbidden Kingdoms - I think funding on this is too seriously stalled for it to make it.  Again, prediction is unchanged.
• Sat.: Out of this World Space Age - it's sucking vacuum...  Unchanged - this project hasn't earned a dime in several days, maybe even weeks.

ENDING NEXT WEEK

• Thu. (late Wed. in US/Canada): Bicycle The Hedge - funding slowed a good deal on this shortly after hitting their goal.  Assuming no promotions or other factors giving this a bump, I'd predict a close somewhere under 150%/$12,000.  Prediction unchanged; it's closing in slowly but surely on 125%.  The last-minute bump might be big for this, but for now that's my story and I'm sticking to it!
• Thu.: SiShou - Four Beasts - while I think it would be criminal for this deck to fail, it will at its present rate of funding, even factoring in a late boost.  It's been averaging about £50 a day recently and with 17 days to go is just short of halfway to the goal.  Perhaps the fact that funding is in GBP rather than USD is an issue for potential investors - we have seen so far just one GBP-valued project succeed, Dicecards, and that deck has little appeal in the card community.  Unfortunately, my prediction is unchanged, though I still hold out hope.  It's a little more than halfway to the goal and a late bump will help - but it will have to be a bump the size of the Catskill Mountains.

ENDING IN TWO WEEKS

• Wed.: New York Lights (NEW) - I wish I could say this one will fail, but the goal is insanely low and it's nearly there now.  I get queasy looking at it.
  
• Thu.: DFC - I give it low odds.  It's moving very slowly out of the gate.  Unchanged.  It's hardly budged since last week.

ENDING IN THREE WEEKS

• Thu.: Founders (NEW) - hit 100% in what, two days?  This thing's got nowhere to go but up.  I predict a close of at least 300-400%, possibly much higher.  Some think it's the next Misc. Goods Co.
• Fri.: Ace Alcohol Education - very unlikely.  Slow pace of funding combined with outrageously high goal work against it.  Unchanged - it has barely moved at all.
• Sat: Mirror Gaff Deck (NEW) - simple deck, modest goal, appeal to magicians (and maybe flourishers who don't like card backs ).  I can see this making its goal, but not a great deal higher; under 200% is my guess.

ENDING IN FOUR WEEKS

• Wed.: Yellow Lotus - canceled by its creator despite having crossed the 100% mark.
• Thu.: Steampunk Cthulhu (NEW) - did we really need another steampunk deck AND another Lovecraft Mythos deck, all wrapped up into the same deck?  Despite my misgivings, the deck's doing all right out of the gate.  Too early to make an accurate guess, so I'll make a wild one: funding crawls to a halt, revives in the late game but falls short at close.
• Thu: SurrealScapes (NEW) - I love the deck but it's gotten a slow start.  Without drawing in more interest from outside the card community, this could fail.  My wild guess is that it will get the outside attention it needs and hit goal, but I wouldn't even make a wild guess as to how far past goal it gets.

ENDING IN FIVE WEEKS

• Fri. (late Thu. in US/Canada): Lost Languages: Yiddish (NEW) - it's a novelty deck, a category that hasn't been treated very well by Kickstarters to date.  It's $14K goal plus the presumably non-USPC print shop make that even tougher.  I'd call it long odds, but there's a lot of time between here and there.

Seems to be a lot of new (and quite crappy) Kickstarters springing up these days, making it hard to separate the good from the bad.  I notice that I know have a large number of KS decks outstanding and the communication can be quite poor.  I thought it'd be a good idea to get an idea from people of status of projects that have already funded and not shipped to see if there are similar experiences out there.  Yes, I know there is a new deck report but it doesn't really focus on what happens after funding as much and sometimes tracking these projects can be a big pain.

I credit Kickstarter with allow a lot of new designs to get funded, some of them quite unique.  In addition it has brought wider recognition to the many different aspects of which playing cards are under, including collection, cardistry as well as magic.  As of right now, I'm completely done with KS decks at this point until I receive the ones I have already ordered.  Too many people seem to have no clue how to run one of these from a logistics and profit standpoint.

And now im going to sound like a douchebag but i guess this needs to be said...



For me those decks are not "canon" in the storyline of collectibles.

Yes, some of the decks are great looking but, the majority of them are bad.

For me a KS deck should be something so amazing, it should be unfair not to back it up... but right now KS operates in a stupid manner, there are a bunch of "original" designs waiting for money, and a lot of them are just "another steampunk deck" or another "insert mythical creature here" deck.

From a real designer stand point (because a lot of the decks are not even designed by somebody that knows how to design something) I think it subtracts value to "our" legitimate decks.

A lot of times theres not even a proper investigation about the decks, nothing... Sometimes the process of creating a KS deck seems like "hey! i like this colour and this weird pattern i found on the internet... lets put it together!"  or even better  " i love steampunk! the world needs a new steampunk deck!"

Yes, I know there is a new deck report but it doesn't really focus on what happens after funding as much and sometimes tracking these projects can be a big pain.

I invite you to post these updates on the NDR topic.  They'd be most welcome.  If you like, I can merge this topic with that one.  I can also help you with improvements in the formatting, if you'd like.

It's not often that people post in the NDR topic besides me, but posts are permitted and can add to the value of the report.  Especially when they're filled with pertinent information like this one.

Yes, there was no report for Monday.  You can chalk it up to sheer exhaustion after being awake for about thirty straight hours.

We also had the Bohemia in a couple of weeks ago (we're in the UK) and have sold out of the Limited red, but both are due back in again soon! I'm very impressed with their efficiency.

I have never backed up any kind of deck of cards in kickstarter.

For me those decks are not "canon" in the storyline of collectibles.

I have no idea what this even means.  Canon as in the meaning of official?  Seems like they just aren't part of your collection is all. 

Yes, some of the decks are great looking but, the majority of them are bad.

There are quite a lot of "bad" decks that aren't done through KS either.  Do those count?

For me a KS deck should be something so amazing, it should be unfair not to back it up... but right now KS operates in a stupid manner, there are a bunch of "original" designs waiting for money, and a lot of them are just "another steampunk deck" or another "insert mythical creature here" deck.

Very few of those are getting funded these days.  I would predict that going forward fewer decks will get funded on KS, due to projects not delivering on time as well as the fact that the new costs of International shipping are making many of these projects too expensive.

From a real designer stand point (because a lot of the decks are not even designed by somebody that knows how to design something) I think it subtracts value to "our" legitimate decks.

Again, look at other decks out there.  What about Merz decks?  Karnival decks?  These are not KS decks yet probably some of the worst and/or repetitive designs out there.  Yet the industry has survived and indeed, in part because of KS, prospered.

Wanna know how to do a real KS deck? go and check out the Virts deck and how they did everything.

Not to my knowledge, I think he was referring to the way they did their pre-order and marketing of their deck.  I do think their campaign was good and they didn't have to give up 10% to Amazon/KS but they probably lost a bit of visibility by not being on KS.
