Understand as I write this, I am NOT opening this up for a massive debate on which board is better.  This is presented for informational purposes only.

I received this email from UC earlier today.  It probably came to me because I once created an account at their ".net" address shortly before they abandoned it.  I present it unedited and unexpurgated.

The following is an e-mail sent to you by an administrator of "United
Cardists - The forum for Cardistry, Magic, and Custom Decks. Sponsored by
Bmpokerworld.com". If this message is spam, contains abusive or other
comments you find offensive please contact the webmaster of the board at
the following address:

board@unitedcardists.com

Include this full e-mail (particularly the headers).

Message sent to you follows:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hi,
I just wanted to go over some changes that will be taking place on our
forum. Our forum is no different than any other forum on the web, it is a
community of people who share a common interest. In this case, it's playing
cards. It should be a place where you go to discuss everything and anything
about playing cards. It should not be a place where would be deck creators
and retailers come here just to promote their new deck or their store,
without adding any meaningful content. Unfortunately, with the rise of
Kickstarter, that is what our forum has become. The vast majority of
content is from new members who go to every forum just to promote their
deck or store without becoming part of the community. That is not why this
forum was created.
Therefore, new deck creators and retailers, as well as existing ones, run
the risk of not being able to post here if the only content they add is
about their new deck creation or a new deck they have in their store. In
addition, anyone who only shows up and makes a couple of post just before
they have a new deck, which they are creating or selling and disappears
again, runs the risk of losing their posting privileges as well. If a new
deck is worthwhile, one of our participating members will be more than
happy to inform our community. If you don't have anything to add but what
you are trying to sell, then you really don't belong here to begin with and
you should find another way to advertise your deck.
I hope everyone understands my feelings on this subject and as always, you
can email me anytime with any questions or concerns you may have.
Thanks!
Mike
Thanks, The Management
OK, now that that's over with...
I want the small-but-growing card design community to know that you are welcomed at the Discourse.  I personally love it when people come here to discuss their decks and answer our questions.  (Yes, even you, Sprouts1115...)  If I was a baseball fan on a baseball forum, would Derek Jeter or Barry Bonds or Name-Your-Favorite-Player just pop in, say hi and answer fans' questions?  Not likely.  I think of it as one of the more awesome things about the playing card community - that places like this exist, where creators and their customers can interact in a meaningful way.
While it's nice to hear directly from you about new releases and such, I would also encourage you to also explore the board and see what it has to offer.  A number of designers have become active members of this community over time; perhaps they're on to something and you should see what you're missing!
To the retailers, well...  We don't have all that many non-designing retailers around here that AREN'T part of the community, do we?  :))  Most of you are just like the rest of us - fans of playing cards, magic and cardistry!  Join us, chat about your products or whatever else comes to mind, be active members.  Advertising a specific product or sale is fine if it's placed in the correct board, the STISO, and only once you've met the requirements for posting there - and it would be appreciated if you kept it to a single topic, like your "other online store".  We especially appreciate the discounts you occasionally send our way!
I got the same email, that being said,  I couldn't agree more with Don's comments about hearing from and seeing what designers are working on. For someone new such as myself, it gives me the opportunity to get a better insight into the process and a greater appreciation for the work that went into something I own.
I heard my name from the dark corners of the universe.  I have the Tarot cards in front of me and it doesn't look good Don.
Is it a 64-card deck?
Oh, ye gods, no!  NOOOOOOO!!!
Goooooood... Let the hate flow through you....
Now look what you did!  You dragged him here with you!!  Baka-ne!!!  Don't you ever watch those horror movies where saying the bad guy's name or some silly nursery rhyme conjures him up?!
Looks like I found a good thread >:(...  What is up with all the purple black holes? :t11: :t11: :t11:
Actually, I wish people would come to the forums for a couple of months before they launch their Kickstarter.  They sometimes come down to the forums and it usually ends up as a crash course to improve their cards.
I can't say I fully disagree with UC's new policy. It does get a little frustrating when someone comes on just to spam. Having said that, with the recent change in rules for STISO. I think that will curb a lot. In general our forum does a good job of policing itself.
We have some awesome designers here. Not all of them post regularly. I'm ok with that. How many times have we seen someone post
I saw Discourse mentioned in a comment on a KS project. I've been lurking, reading post here for a few weeks seeing all the advice you guys give. This is a project I'm working on. What do you think?
I think that's pretty cool.
Last night I stayed up late playing poker with Tarot cards. I got a full house and four people died.
This is probably the most sensible statement that has ever erupted from your keyboard to my screen.
It is cool.  I'm fine with people coming around and giving us a peek at what they're working on, asking what we think of something, etc.  It's great that designers are that interested in hearing from us.  We do on rare occasions get a designer who comes on, asks for advice, then ignores it completely and plows ahead as if he didn't read a thing we said - in other words, he only came here to chat up his deck.  To that I say, it's their loss, not ours - someone unwilling to listen to their potential customers will often find themselves with fewer potential customers.
And our policy has always been pretty simple, the more you contribute, the more you can shamelessly plug your work. There is no red line drawn, the staff here just take it in a case by case basis. When someone is spamming or being an assface, it's pretty obvious, and pretty easy to deal with.
We had tons of members start out with just a shameless plug, and end up being huge contributors.
So, if there is shame in the plug, is that somehow better?  :))
I find plugs to be incredibly shameful, which is why I find it so difficult to take a bath.
I prefer showers.
.... This makes so much more sense now.
I read numerous posts complaining or arguing about this policy on UC.
But I never received the email myself, so I never quite knew where the info had come from.
Who knew he came out and directly said it... "Your not welcome here."
I found it a little incredible myself, which is why I made my statement to the artists and designers and retailers we all know and love so much.  If someone comes on here to be a tool and do nothing but pump their wares, we'll notice - our BS detectors can smell it anywhere within 100 miles...  :))  The smarter ones treat us like people and make us want to hear about their work, the more foolish ones are only alienating their potential buyers (not the best of all possible business plans)...
I don't know about anyone else.  Does it seem that the UC plugs BMpokerworld a bit too much. ;)
I feel its ironic that the UC does not want designers to plug their products, but BMpokerworld will gladly sell them after they are produced.  Talk about biting the had that feeds you.
Well...I do know of a few people who won't distribute their decks to him.  If he gets them, it's by paying retail for them, not wholesale.
How is there confusion to the owner anyway? Not a secret lol.
Cause Don's rank is "Board Owner" while mine is "Forum Founder." This apparently means I should ban myself. I'd do that, but unfortunately banning the admin account bans every member. Woe.
