Are you sure they were flamingos and not elongated lower-case "f" letters?  Because the Fontaine deck just came out in its second color and the first's been out for months.

Are you talking about the ones by Omar Renfro. They should be released 1/1/2014. But I haven't heard anything. You can follow him on IG for updates. @ramod92

What a perfect opportunity to create a custom design PINK deck of playing cards. I think he really missed the boat with the color selection. So much more could have been done with those long flamingo legs then just another two-way logo back.

The project's International shipping prices are a turn off.

There are no good pledges if you are an international or Canadian backer. In fact $35 shipping for 6 decks and $65 shipping for a brick are pretty outrageous unless he's shipping UPS which is another bad idea for international shipping. I know there is a rate increase coming up but that is ridiculous. If Zach Mueller can ship a brick of Fontaines for like $30 what makes this guy think he can ship them for more than twice as much?

In fact for international customers the early bird tiers give us no savings compared to other projects.

Oh yeah, anyone want a signed card? Only $1...plus $10 shipping! On what should cost like 80 cents with a stamp.

I would personally be in for 6 decks if shipping were reasonable and I know someone who would be in for a brick, Omar's loss I guess. Here is his response btw.

"The rates are set at that for a reason shipping internationally costs alot of money iv talked to plenty of people who have sold cards on here before and the main problem is usually the international shipping so i made sure the prices were set to were i wouldn't have to come out of pocket at all."

I can understand his concerns but it seems like he's done no research on actual shipping costs and even so isn't some of that cost usually factored into the price of the deck itself? There shouldn't be any out of pocket expenses or outrageous shipping costs if things are run correctly.

Yes, the international shipping charges are well out of whack.  But aren't you US-based?

This is the part that worries me most - his "Risks and Challenges" statement:
I've been working on this project on and off for almost a year, so this is kind of like my baby. I'm only one guy so keep in mind if this does get funded shipping 2,500 will take some time I hope all of you can be patient with me.

He might as well have said up front "Your decks will be LATE!"  Funnier still is that he thinks that's the only thing he (and more importantly, his backers) has to worry about...

I'm not too sure....but an hour skype session cost an additional $390.   :o

Oh...of course...it includes a T-shirt. That should balance things up a little

Yeah t-shirts are also quite expensive. And sure now he lowers the price on shipping of a brick, but I still think it is a bit too pricey. This guy think he's Daniel Madison or something, I mean $390 for a Skype session?

Did you guys see the update Omar posted today on the kickstarter?  It shows the faces of the cards - pink color for the red cards.  I think this will look nice.  I signed up for a brick.  Hope it gets funded.

Only two things I'm concerned with
1.  How long it will take for the decks to arrive, given Omar's disclaimer.
2.  "cambric" finish....?  I hope it's not like the "cambric" finish on Ace Fulton's Casino deck.....   <shudder>

But other than that... I'm kinda excited about this deck!  :)

Wow!! You signed up for a brick? I watch most of your reviews. Of the videos I've seen, you usually have great taste. I'm really surprised by this.

I remember seeing a video of these a while back; I wanted them but they weren't available at the time.  When I saw them on KS I jumped on the early bird brick price (which is still available).  They just look kinda like fun cards.  It's very possible I might end up downgrading to a half brick later.  I usually end up add/removing from my pledge towards the end of the project once I have seen all the updates and know exactly what I'm getting (or not getting).  I myself actually like the pink/blue design.  Reminds me of all the bright colored tennis shoes they are selling now.  At first you see those tennis shoes and you think "what?  who??  what!!?!?"... and then after a bit your mind has melted into a thick paste from staring too long... and you start thinking maybe they look nice.

Maybe I'm off on this one.  Does anyone care to chime in with their opinions of the deck's design itself?  (shipping and extras discussions aside)

If I had to critique anything I would say the design risks being too simple.  It would be nice to have some more customization on the court cards.... something beyond just color.  And the white borders may verge on being a little thick.

Basically i find the deck quite boring. When I hear/see "Flamingo Playing Cards", i was expecting something more flamboyant or just something more eye-catching. This deck just feels like something a bird park or a "Flamingo-logo bar" will mass produce and sell. As you said, the colour change from red to pink is nice, but i definitely feel more is needed in this deck. The AoS and the back design looks lazy if u ask me.

Ok, i can try overlook the back design because "The back of the playing cards has a retro '70's feel with a simplistic touch based off the "classic casino" look.", But I feel a little more detailing can be added rather than just smack a negative space in the middle of the AoS.

And i just notice cause i was looking at the price of brick and half brick as it was mentioned. Why does an EB half brick cost $35 and a EB brick cost $85? I know it is still cheaper than a normal pledge, but it just gives a feeling that you are paying extra for supporting and getting more decks.

I will make my opinion of this deck as succinct and direct as possible.

Crockett and Tubbs called; they want their deck back.

This deck might have been cool thirty years ago, especially if you lived in Miami or Key West - not today.

I think the problem most people are having is the idea is a really good one. You want to buy the deck but the design is just not on par with the idea.

Ok..That made me look stupid. Of course I would pay extra when i am getting more.  :-[

But...what i meant was it would cost cheaper to get 2 EB half bricks if i could, than to get a EB full brick. It makes people reconsider getting a full brick i feel.

I think the problem most people are having is the idea is a really good one. You want to buy the deck but the design is just not on par with the idea.

I think you have a point here.  There's minimalist and there's sparse - this deck is not minimalist.  As far as the design, it really does seem like someone could have banged this out in an afternoon, even while watching the game on TV with one eye.  The art is simple to the point of looking like clip art.

That could be it - this reminds me of a Merz67-designed deck.

To make this project kick and really give it an '80s South Beach feel, you'd need much better art on the backs and jokers, and perhaps tweaking the courts to make them look like Miami Vice extras - '80s fashions, hairstyles, make-up jobs, accessories (like 1st-gen brick cellphones and Panama hats)...  This deck (and I believe its creator as well) wants to evoke that feeling but doesn't go nearly far enough with the design.

In its present state, the only thing missing to make it a no-budget, cheaply-made souvenir deck would be the words "Welcome to (pick your favorite South Florida town, resort or bar)!" printed somewhere on the back in pastel colors...

Ok..That made me look stupid. Of course I would pay extra when i am getting more.  :-[

But...what i meant was it would cost cheaper to get 2 EB half bricks if i could, than to get a EB full brick. It makes people reconsider getting a full brick i feel.

No, it wasn't stupid.  It was obvious!  He's charging extra for a whole brick, plain and simple.  The math seems to have escaped him, at least for the moment...

The only valid excuse I'd see for charging more for a brick would be if it came in a custom brick box.  An EXPENSIVE custom brick box.
