Came across this listing today on ebay. For $600 you get a very nice old deck. Here's the description and the link

http://www.ebay.com/itm/221377312781?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649

Very Rare opportunity to ad this amazing AS ISSUED deck of A. Dougherty playing cards to your collection!

This is a wonderful estate find that you do not want to miss out on.

This is a Tally Ho No.9 deck in Horse shoe back #916 , very rare!

The outer box has been opened, the tax stamp is still there and is a 2 cent (1894-1917) it has not been overprinted and does not have a 17 stamp on it so they are pre 1917 playing cards.

I would rate the box as a strong OB2 if not an OB1 it is that nice!

The deck is unopened!  sealed !

The extra advertising card is also present and in mint condition.

I have not checked the Hochman catalog but believe this deck to be late 1800's to very early (pre 1910) .  over 100 years old and still sealed!!

Hochman AD22. Nice back! A decent Tally Ho from 1900-1910 [this one is post 1898] might be worth $100. Still wrapped adds substantial value. I don't have a mint Tally Ho and at that price I won't be getting one soon. :(

  • I really like cards.

Don has a good point here. The seller may have no idea what these cards are really worth and might be fishing, or even just hoping he will hit it big with an old deck of cards. Of course, on the flip side, he may well know what the cards are worth and is hoping to take advantage of someone else's lack of knowledge.

...or we may not be giving the seller the benefit of the doubt, he knows what he's selling, he's asking for the sun and the stars but is willing to settle for a constellation or two and might think it would be a cool thing to pass on his rare and precious deck to one of the best-known collectors in the world (or perhaps even to a collector who's new at the game but to whom he's willing to cut a deal because he's just that kind of guy), forming a connection that could turn into a friendship and lead to other deals...

While some sellers will simply squeeze you for every penny they can, in the end, it's only the pennies they're left with, not the camaraderie and community that develops when people realize that the social aspect of meeting like-minded people can easily trump any price tag.

I don't know about these things, so forgive me if I'm doing something wrong.

Is this more close to what these are worth, or is this a bargain?

STOP THE PRESSES, PEOPLE.

Compare the photos of the blue deck from both the one-deck sale/OBO listed in the first post and the two-deck sale/OBO, both sales being held by the same seller.

The images of the two decks are IDENTICAL, down to the last crease on the tuck box and tear on the tax stamp.

Supposedly, that deck in blue was already sold in the first auction - so how is the same seller SELLING IT AGAIN, WITH ANOTHER DECK, AT LESS THAN HALF THE ORIGINAL PRICE?  The deck by itself supposedly sold for $325.00 on an asking price of $600.00.  It makes no sense - I can't even call it shill bidding because it wasn't an auction.

BTW: this deck, assuming it's genuine, can't be older than 1898.  The ad card states the company was founded in 1848 and that it's "The Standard for More Than Half a Century".

Hmm, i looked at that earlier Buy-it-now, clicked "see other items", and this came up. I thought that it ended unsold before, because I didn't see anything about any buyer. Doesn't it show when something is really bought, as opposed to just ended?

But, you're right, it seems strange if it indeed was sold in the first auction. But lets say this was som kind of shill-sell to raise the price, why would he sell the next, with TWO decks, for a lower price?

I offered him $100 for both decks.  He countered with $150.  Do any of you want one of the decks for $75?

If you want both of them, make him an offer of $150 and he'll accept it.  If you want one, shoot me a PM and I'll complete the transaction and forward you one of the decks.

Seems to me that $100 offer for the pair would have been a good buy. Sealed, authentic decks that are 100 years old don't appear every day - so............

Hammer dropped!  $125

Assuming it's legit, I have an extra Tally-Ho deck for sale.  I won't accept a penny over $62.50.  First person to PM wins!

The decks arrived over the weekend.  They are exactly as pictured.  If anyone wants one for $62.50, I'll ship it to you.  Or maybe it would be more fun to arrange a trade...

Glad it worked out great. Enjoy!

I think sooner or later I have to get into vintage decks, but not just yet.
