I wonder if what's in the Mystery Box is that game changer deck of cards Theory11 was talking about last year, but it never got released due to whatever reason. I have to admit if that actual box was the tuckbox for a deck of cards, it'd be pretty cool.

Except Zenneth Kok is already doing a box like that more or less.

Too true.  It makes this deck look a day late and a dollar short.

There was a lot of huff about the mystery box being a Mentalism trick. They use a cryptex for the lock, I assumed something along the lines of da Vinci zone that max maven came out with.

  • I like birds.

  • Kickstarter:
Could be a marked or gaffed deck.

But yeah. VERY similar to the Question Deck. Should be interesting, nonetheless.

If it is some sort of trick or gaffed deck, it would be a first for Theory11.  Up until now, their magic has been mostly confined to DVDs and video downloads, and to my knowledge they've never released a trick deck of their own design.

I never liked mystery when it comes to spending my money. We've had a few examples of companies selling things with many unknowns. Promises of videos to come, join a club and hope its worth it. Sometimes it is worth it and sometimes people get skunked. My point is, a company hides the details (mystery) because the product is more hype rather then value. At the end of the day, we have a wood box. You might pay 10x more for what's inside because of a wood box.

I can see your point, certainly.  But there are occasions where even the company itself doesn't know exactly what they're going to provide you with, so they can't make specific promises of anything.  I'm 100% certain that when Ellusionist formed the Black Club, they had no clue that in their first year they'd give away or make available at discount everything that they ended up giving or offering.  They just knew they wanted to make it worth the cash paid for the membership, and it appears to have worked well, at least for the first year.

It would be nice if those occasions were more the rule than the exception...

Maybe something related to Harry Houdini?  RAHRY, Harry...I tried using other coding stuff I've done in the past and nothing really lines up.
Starting to get better...have to stay dedicated...can't lose any more cards in the middle of a trick.  Literally, completely lost a card.

That confirms its playing card related to me. Lyle (theory11) would have ignored this thread if we were wrong to assume.

Theory11 just posted this on their facebook/instagram, with the caption "#jjabrams #badrobot" attached to it.

So now we know it's got something to do with jj abrams or at least his production company, bad robot.

I think Star Wars / Star Trek crossover promotion is a possibility here. His new tv series which is coming out soon, Believe, is probably the strongest contender here.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Believe_(TV_series)

A long shot might be one of the tv shows that bad robot produces currently, like almost human or revolution.

EDIT: The more I think about it, the more my money is on Believe. The show is created by Alfonso Cuaron. So a Theory11 tie in with a JJ Abrams/Bad Robot new tv show headed by Cuaron is a very big deal indeed. The show is airing in a couple weeks so this is just about the right time to start building hype for it.

In hindsight, it looks like it's the Bad Robot logo embossed on the packaging/tuckbox. The size and everything does point to a deck of cards. Curious to see what the thing actually is and the cost of it.

Five years ago, Lost creator J.J. Abrams gave a now-famous speech at TED Talks that summarized his entire approach to storytelling. In a childhood trip to Lou Tannen's Magic Store, Abrams bought a "mystery magic box" — a box that has always remained a mystery.

"I bought this decades ago, but if you look at this, you'll see it's never been opened. Ever," said Abrams. "Why have I not opened this, and why have I kept it?… It represents infinite possibility. It represents hope. It represents potential. What I love about this box — and what I realized I sort of do, in whatever it is that I do — is I find myself drawn to infinite possibility and that sense of potential. And I realize that mystery is the catalyst for imagination... What are stories besides mystery boxes?"

Probably the best reason to work with theory11 on a deck of cards. Here's hoping, if it is a deck, it's complete custom and not just custom AoS, Joker(s), Back design and tuckbox.

Well, it's a deck, except that it's also a gigantic "JJ Abrams never opened his mystery box so you don't get to see anything but a a bit of the case and the ace of spades" cop-out.

Oh, and you get to pay $10 a deck to figure out if you like the design or not.

Yeah, screw that.

From the video trailer, it looks like standard number cards while it has custom courts (similar in design to Sentinels, at least to my eyes). I really do wish there was some proper photos of the deck.

$1 from deck will be donated to 826 National, a non-profit dedicated to promoting creative writing in schools and workshops around the USA, which is a plus.

Honestly at 10$/deck it's still cheaper than the collaborations that D&D have done, which are 12$ (HMNIM deck) and 15$ (Bruce Lee deck).

Oh woah!!! It's by J.J. Abrams? I am actually a big fan of his works!
Now I feel pretty awesome to coincidentally release a deck on the same theme with him!
