I have no freaking clue on anything about parrots other than the fact that they appear in pirate movies/stories and they can fly.

"The suits are divided by species - cockatoos for the hearts, lories and lorikeets for the diamonds, conures for the clubs, and macaws for the spades.  Together, they represent four diverse families in the Psittacine order.  The two jokers will be represented by the budgerigar, the most widely kept pet parrot in the world, and the comical white bellied caique."

I have no idea what she is saying here, but i like the fact that the suits are divided by species rather than simply throwing different parrot faces onto random cards. But it would be nicer if she could include the names of each species. I mean, cockatoos is just a general name for a family of species right?I don't know, like there will be "Indian cockatoo" or "Pirate cockatoo"?(i'm clearly making names up, but you guys get the idea).

Just 2 things about this deck i don't like. 1) is the indices seem a little hard to see on certain cards. 2) I really do not like the hand-drawn black background, especially it being so obvious on some cards where it is a little more greyish than black. It creates this black "border" with wavy lines, though most probably intentional, but is really not to my liking. I would rather she have a clean backgound and make the parrot stand out more this way....ok maybe 3 things. 3) i really prefer decks that have a "surprise" or at least something different for the joker. Maybe parrot lovers and ornithologist can tell the difference immediately, but to me, it is just another bird head on a card.

The tuck is a...meh~ but i like the back. I don't really care for 1-way or 2-way backs so the 1-way doesn't affect me, but i think the back is very nice and suited for the theme of the deck.

I think for the people here this is going to fall into a bit of the novelty category, printing by USPC is a 28k stretch goal.....BUT, i want to give Renee a lot of credit for a couple of things. 54 unique images, thats fantastic...especially when there are so many that can‘t muster up 16 unique courts. Second, i absolutely love the back design!

I wish her luck with it.

The backs are the best for a novelty deck I've seen in a long time...include a [somewhat] subtle one-way backs, reasonable price, if they get close to the USPCC printing I'm in.
Starting to get better...have to stay dedicated...can't lose any more cards in the middle of a trick.  Literally, completely lost a card.

Hey everyone!  I'm the artist behind this deck and I just want to thanks everyone for their comments and critiques!  This is the first deck I've ever designed and I know it most certainly has its flaws, but I had a ton of fun with it and I really enjoyed the process.

If anyone has any specific questions for me, let me know and I'll answer as best I can!

Welcome to the Discourse - as well as the world of playing cards!

I'll say it - this deck isn't my cup of tea.  But...

There's absolutely no denying the level of quality work that went into the art.  It's quite beautiful.

Is the design perfect?  No.  Does it matter?  Absolutely not, in this case.  Art decks tend to get a bit more leeway - they're more like a hand-held art gallery, less like something you'd see on a casino poker table.  You have indices, they can be read without too much trouble, so I don't see a problem.  In fact, I like that they don't take the focus from the art.

It's certainly different. I once owned a parrot, my nieces have budgies so I suppose I can relate in that sense lol that back is very nice but, personally, I think it needs a bit more colour.
Also, reminds me of the animation, Rio, and I love Rio :)
Kudos Renee, it's a nice looking deck that I didn't think I'd like when I first read the title.

Thanks for the comments, guys!  The projects doing pretty well, thanks in large part (I think) to most parrot owners being crazy-obsessive about the birds - myself included!

And hehe, the card back design is absolutely to my own taste.  I've seen some really beautiful and elaborate ones on other kickstarter projects, but I guess I like the stark black-and-white look.  It's more traditional, I guess?  I don't know!  It's a personal preference! :>  I'm hoping in future projects (I've been asked to do a parrot tarot deck, haha) I can try to be more adventurous!

Glad you're enjoying the experience here.

A "one-color" look is very traditional - most common deck designs prior to the current wave of custom decks were one-color affairs, often quite elaborate, which made them both attractive and easy on the eyes.  It's much simpler to tell two decks apart if each back is a single-but-different color from the other (unless, of course, the colors are too close together visually).

As much as I love some custom backs, I also can really appreciate and enjoy a single-color design - it's what I use most when performing magic.
