Some of my Favorites. May any viewer enjoy them
1st up.. This is the only example of this deck that i've seen that is complete.. It's made to look like a Military Backpack (the deck) with the Bedroll (A sleeve of Poker Chips) The Sleeve of Chips is VERY fragile and are barely attached to begin with. The Deck opens by pulling on the Roll of Chips.. I'm sure that these were ripped off on the first try, used in a game or 2 and then lost to the ages...They were issued by the New York Consolidated Playing Card Co. c1898 for the Spanish American War... a very cool deck...

Mint, Sealed Derby No. 30 by APCC c1900.. The scan doesnt do the wrapper justice. Just a Beautiful and Quite rare deck from the American Playing Card Co. with an extra added bonus of having a 2nd joker as the sample card!.. I have another example of this deck with a different, equally wonderful Joker...

Mint, sealed Extra Congress 606 c1895.. This deck is just fantastic, the wrapper itself has to be seen to be appreciated... It has a tuck flap that you can pull out without having to rip or tear to take the deck out and is sealed with the very early USPC growling tiger Stamp.. i will have to post a pic of this as it is wonderful... the deck is Gold Edged and has great spiderweb backs and the flesh toned Dundreary Joker.. an extremely classy deck of cards..

Nice Eagle Card Co. Steamboats No. 124 c1870.. This is a VERY unusual deck of cards that was used to play a game called "Casino"  The 2 of Spades is marked "Little Casino" The 10 of Diamonds is marked "Big Casino" and the 3's are marked "Don", the 5's are marked "Pedro", and the 9's are marked "Sancho" these were popular games of cards in the late 1860's-1870's. This particular deck is round cornered and a Steamboat grade deck that is not listed in Hochman.. I call it L-6 although the L-6 in Hochman is listed as a Square cornered deck.. the Bret Harte "Heathen Chinee" joker is awesome...As is the original box with the intact label (the Labels on the edges are present also)...Ante Up!!

c1849 Mexican American War Deck.. I love War decks, and this one is a particular favorite. the Kings all show the leading generals of the United States Army at the time..including General Winfield Scott and General, and future United States President, Zachary Taylor.. The aces are incredibly detailed (most probably Steel pen, or Copper plate engraved), they are 2 sided with each side showing a particular battle during the Mexican-American War. The one that i have scanned is different from the other 3 as it has a caption banner across the middle with the famous line "A little more Grape Captain Bragg" ..Captain Bragg being the future General Braxton Bragg of the Confederate States of America.. and the order given by General Zachary Taylor at the battle of  Buena Vista, Mexico... Awesome history... a beautiful deck...

Hey T... I'm not really sure who the maker is.. has the look and feel of being European though, i'm leaning towards one of the Vienna makers.. sure has that feel to me..at least as far as the courts go. I don't think the actual maker has ever been pinned down. There's so few of the decks around..Any thoughts?

That's who i was leaning towards too Tom... Jean would probably have a good idea, although i don't know if there's any definitive proof on who did this edition... The 1870 version is thought to have been done by Brepols or Van Genechten. I don't think that's been pinned down either.. C.

Very nice cards indeed, all of them. The Mexican War deck is listed in the book by Melbert Cary. The author pleads for an European origin. I would say Belgian, which means one of the Turnhout makers. I think the deck has been printed in lithography, rather than engraving, but that is just my opinion based on the general aspect. In order to pin it down, I would need to see the real cards. Maybe in Charlotte?

Jean & Tom......Charlotte here i come.. lol... maybe i'll visit Jean in Charlotte and then hitch a ride to Charleston to go to the convention... I digress.. I do hope that i can make the convention. I'm going to have a busy fall getting 2 younguns' off to college...

Jean.. when i first got the deck many, many years ago I was thinking Jos. Glanz or J. Sageder of the Vienna makers or perhaps Mesmaekers from Belgium.. But I still can't ascribe it to anyone definitive ... So any input is much appreciated, I know that you are much more knowlegable than I concerning European & other foreign decks.

I always thought that these early war decks, especially the Aces with their intricate battle scenes, looked too finely done to be Lithography.. but if they are, kudos to the makers, i wish i had that talent!

Glanz and Sageder seem improbable to me, but... As to the printing technique, it is just my opinion, not really stressable without having seen the cards.
Otherwise, I'll try to keep that girl I once knew out of my head and make it to the right place. Thank you for the adjustment.

Thank you so much for the sharing!! All the decks are really magnificent and I contemplated pix a long time..
About the Derby deck, could you put a scan of the back of the 2nd joker to know what he looks like please ?
For the fabulous Eagle Card Co. Steamboats #124, I saw only another copy some time ago on the cowanauctions website (http://www.cowanauctions.com/auctions/item.aspx?ItemId=34432) but finally, boxes seem identical.
Very pleased to see the deck differently ;)

Here's a rare version of the commonly seen Civil War deck W-5... with it's original paper wrapper...fragile, but hanging in there!

I need to research this one some more. It is by far the earliest Crehore deck that i've seen... the courts are very different from all the Crehore decks i've examined..much more crude. I've never seen a deck with 15 Stars above the eagle... only 13. The stock is very thick compared to all the others i've seen... any thoughts/comments are welcome...

Another personal favorite.. Beautiful French Historic deck with non-standard courts and wonderfully decorated pips c1860-65 by Melle Hautot, Paris ( I have seen this attributed to another maker in the past) if anybody can set the record straight, your input is more than welcome.

Very nice Slowhand! If you have a little time left for that, it would be great to see the back of the Derby jokers.

Another personal favorite.. Beautiful French Historic deck with non-standard courts and wonderfully decorated pips c1860-65 by Melle Hautot, Paris ( I have seen this attributed to another maker in the past) if anybody can set the record straight, your input is more than welcome.
Here is the exact description with quotes:
Mlle (Mademoiselle = Miss) Hautot, Paris; Imp. (Imprimerie = Printery) Wiesener & Cie, 12, rue Delaborde, Paris. Cartes Historiques (Historical Cards). Design: Mme (Madame = Mrs) Paris (Esther Paris-Persennet ?) 32, complete. Chromolith., 99x63 mm, square corners, no index mark. Backs: Plain pink. 1863.
Lit.: Merlin p. 116; Cary coll. 348; Hoffmann [1972] p. 35 & ill. 54b; Hoffmann/Dietrich [Geschichte] p. 31 & ill. 16.
Luxurious and elegant cards, enhanced with much gold, displaying figures in historical costumes. They are named after the Portrait Officiel. The suit-signs have been modified: spades are spearheads, the color of the clubs is gilt, hearts and diamonds have been reduced to their golden frame lines. These 3 suit-signs are adorned with flowers, birds and fruits respectively (as to clubs then on gilt background), also on the pips, in again and again changing arrangements. The box shows Jacquemin Gringonneur, it also mentions that the deck is „B.S.G.D.G.“ (breveté sans garantie du gouvernement = patented without guarantee of the government). Such information, combined with the ones supplied by Merlin and Depaulis in „Cartiers Parisiens“ p. 28, allows us to identify the pack at long last. The booklet carries the name of its printer Wiesener. It also gives the interesting list of the „DÉPOTS A PARIS“, i.e. the stores where the cards were available:
Maurin, rue des Fossés-Saint-Victor, 24.
Grimaud (here with “coins arrondis“, i.e. rounded corners, a process newly patented by Grimaud), rue de Bondy, 70.
Avril et Cie, rue de la Banque, 20.
Susse Frères, place de la Bourse, 31.
Alph. Giroux, boulevard des Capucines, 43.
Martinet, boulevard des Capucines, 12 (Grand Hôtel).
Esther Paris-Persennet was a Paris portrayer in pastels and a copist, active 1845/68 (Thieme-Becker XXVI p. 236). She is – in Thieme-Becker – the only fitting female artist.
Minimally damaged original slipcase, booklet (16 pages, printed on one side only)

We have this beautiful French pack in a 32 card version in near mint condition with a plain pink back. Unfortunately, we have 31 cards - the Diamond 8 is missing. Perhaps Slowhand could send us a good scan of that card. And if Cartorama ever gets an incomplete pack with an eight of diamonds, perhaps he would help us complete ours!
