I begin with two :

1 :  A young woman has in her hand four antique American Kalamazoo aces.

2 : Three men play poker with an antique Bicycle deck, Expert (or Old Fan?) back.

There's an entire book of photos like these, only recently released.  I think Larry Lubliner wrote it.  I'm pretty sure it's for sale at dananddave.com.

BTW: the subjects of the photos would never have called them "antique" at the time the photo was actually taken.  You could, in theory, call EVERYTHING you see in the photos "antique" if you think about it, so why call any of them antique? 

After a close examination of the image scans, I'm thinking that the deck used in the second photo was the Expert Back rather than the Old Fan Back.  My reasoning is that, while the resolution of the scan isn't high enough for a great amount of detail, it is plainly visible that the images in the corners of the deck back design are perfectly round, as you would find in the Expert Back, and not more "oval"/fan-shaped as you would find in the Old Fan Back.

Not pinochle.  Among the cards on the table are a two and a four.  Poker deck, more likely. Maybe bridge, but the size looks more like poker.

That is a wonderful photograph. I wonder if the layout of the cards can be identified as a specific game. Solitaire? Fortune telling? Whatever it is, she clearly does not approve!

Cynthia Kuber Herbst, heiress and wife of Theodore Herbst, with KEM Cameo cards.  Mr. Herbst bought control of KEM cards around 1937.  Claimed in one book to be the face on the KEM ace of spades.

I am quite sure the 'contestant' is none other than the famous bridge expert Charles Goren. Marx was know for his passion for bridge.

The Getty website says the 'contestant' is Sanita Pelkey. Did Mr. Goren have an alias?

It's mis-titled.  The very next image at the Getty website shows Groucho with a woman in a lovely sweater - she's described as Sanita Pelkey, Moulin Rouge showgirl.

Here are two other antique photos where we can see the decks that are used :

- The first one shows two men with a Bicycle #808 Pneumatic back n°1 (c1894) in their hands.
- The second depicts a woman covered with Andrew Dougherty cards : the first Outing #17 (Hochman AD29, c1892) with a Buffalo back.

Do you think you could identify the deck on this photo please Tom ? I thought that the design of the Ace of spades looked like a little of a Caterson model or L29/L41 for the black border but I couldn't find an exact version in the Hochman.

Thank you Tom! I hope that Nöel was joyful for you too. Indeed, the SU26 is very similar and even if it's not sure, I did not find better than that. Another pleasant photo (or photo montage?) for this beginning of year : a game of cards with an antique Star Back.
