£15 for shipping one deck? I think that project wasn't thought very well.

It wasn't.  He saw the light and adjusted both the pricing and shipping.  You can now get a deck for £7 and shipping outside of UK is £5.

Price seems reasonable now but I'm not big on this deck. Although I do like the pips/indices.

That's about all I like in this current version.

Here's what I posted at UC on the 'Aces Eye'.  It could use some tweaking, because all I see is this.   ;)

Pierre, you like just lobbing these grenades in the room and waiting for people to start talking, don't you?  :))

I'm sorry but using the Art Deco font on your computer doesn't qualify as being inspired by Art Deco.

I love that dealer domino...  "Who says it has to be a button?," the creator asks.  I dunno - about a century of gaming tradition, perhaps?  Poker players are a traditional, even superstitious bunch - they don't like traditions to be broken for no good reason.  And how the hell does that fit in the tuck box?  Folded?

I really wish people would stop trying to reinvent the wheel when the one we have already works very nicely...  Custom pips are great - a reinvented pip system, not so much.

Thought I'd join the forum after receiving an invite on Kickstarter (plus I am not afraid to take constructive criticism) ;)

As people will be aware, this is my very first attempt at card design and as such my efforts can almost certainly be improved in future - as I am finding out now!
That was kind of the point though. I wanted to put something out there and wait for the feedback to come rolling in (good or bad). As long as it is constructive, which so far it has been... With a sprinkling of sarcastic humour (which is fine and mad me laugh) then I am happy.

It doesn't mater to me if the project reaches it's target or not. The most valuable thing I can take from the experience is experience.
I value the feedback from members of this and other forums and will endeavour to take all comments on board :)

Many thanks,

Adam (the designer).

P.S: Yes, the pricing issue was an oversight / miscalculation on my part, but I consider that lesson number one in what will no doubt be a long (painful), but enlightening road of discovery!

Welcome to the board!  I presume you're Adam Watts?

I recommend you check out our Design & Development board.  Many designers just like you go there to present design ideas, solicit comments and make improvements before unleashing their deck into the wilds of Kickstarter or one of the other new options for a deck maker.

Your design...it needs some work.  What audience are you looking to draw?  If it's a poker crowd (just guessing by the "dealer" strip of paper that isn't a button), this deck really needs an overhaul.  I could go on at length, but it's ground I've covered before in other topics about other decks.  Do some poking around or ask me questions here.

Wow, that's a really good attitude to have, yeah everyone has their own ideas of what is great, and your positivity is awesome to hear, you are right even it the project does not succeed you have at least tried, it is better to have tried and failed than never tried anything, not that I am saying it will not succeed at all, in fact I think it has a great chance you seem to have put in a lot of work into the deck and it us really original, I have one question though, I don't understand the dots in the centre, can you elaborate about this creative design idea? Good luck on your KS!

Hi Don / Rose, thank you for replying...

Don: I appreciate your honesty and advice (and understand that you do not have the time to recover old ground telling me something that is already out there).
I wish I had known about the help / advice sections - for new designers - on this forum, before I had launched. But you live and learn don't you?

So am I correct in thinking that your advice would be to call time on my current project with a view to revising it (using the opinions and advice of the community)?
If so, I am more than happy to do this - if it is possible to cut a project short on Kickstarter? Would this not however, upset my existing backers or make them lose faith in me?
Hopefully they would understand if I poste an update saying that the project has been put on hold pending further improvements to the design... What do you think?

Rose: Thank you for the kind words. I really appreciate you taking the time to respond to my post. Feel free to give me any of your own feedback etc. as well ;)
About the dot and line configuration - my idea was that the numerical cards in the deck (which was predominantly aimed at collectors for the novelty value of every card trying to appear like an ace - to answer an earlier question from Don) increased in dots and lines the higher the number e.g. the three of spades would have three dots / pips inside the spade, the four would have four and on and on until you run out of dot combinations and thus connect them with lines instead... If all that makes sense?

Probably it doesn't, because - as I am finding out - this brainchild clearly still requires some refinement! (But that's okay - I like a challenge).

Anyway, if either of you (or anyone else for that matter) would care to advise me further I would be very grateful and will take the necessary steps to come out the other side with a much more appealing and rounded pack of cards :)

Kind regards,

Adam Watts aka: Watsi88.

I have a piece of constructive criticism that hasn't been brought up yet. I play live poker, both in casinos and at home games, and the production of the pictures you posted scream "amateur" to me. Those are cheap plastic chips, bottom of the barrel, about as fancy as playing with loose change from your pocket. The table you used isn't even a poker table! It immediately turns me off from the whole project. If you want to appeal to a poker player I would really like to see you upping the production value. You can purchase a sample set of chips that will look like they come from a casino for quite a reasonable price if you look around, and even an amateur looking poker table will be fine if the felt looks appropriate. To be honest, I suspect you don't play poker at all, as no real hand of poker would result in 4 colors of chips going into the pot in that amount.

He used a blackjack table and the cheapest chips short of using pebbles and twigs.  I do hear you on that - but honestly, of all the things needed here, that's pretty small in the grand scheme.  So what?  It's a photo, it's not the end of the world and it can be fixed.

Yes, bat around some ideas on the Design/Dev board.

Yes, you can cancel your project if you're planning a major revamp.  You may lose some backers, but you would probably gain more.

The "novelty value" of making all the cards appear like an ace is not a good idea.  Think about that for a moment - all the cards look like aces.  Does that sound better than all the cards looking like their own values, for easier differentiation?  Yes, you want to make an appealing, attractive design, but you also want something that's practical and usable or you'll end up severely limiting the deck's appeal to potential buyers.
