  • Pick a card, any card...no, not THAT card!

@alexanderliss - It's great that you are taking in some of the suggestions, but I think you compromised your deck a little to much.  Yes, your deck is now functional, but I did like your original pips.  Not the indices with the circle, but the artwork in the middle.  Your indices now are a bit boring.  If you could come up with a indices like this guy did it would be nice.  Also, as a suggestion if you could make the back of your card like in the same style as your pips and "2-way" meaning a mirror image that would also look nice.  Right now it seems your back of card is a bit to simple with your talents and it's "1-way"  In your courts, it's great they are "2-way", but you need to have a better transition from one side of the card to the other.

100% AGREE !

Did he really change those pips that much?

The indices are still a little messed up.  They're also at uneven heights from each other and many are too close to the edge of the card.

BTW: why "inked anime"?  I get that this is like tattoo flash art, but I don't recognize any of the characters from any anime I've ever seen.  There's a word for anime characters on paper - manga.  "Anime" is the Japanese term for animation - even a tattoo can't lay claim to that unless you're implanting some pretty intense hardware into your subject's body...

Close to the edge is indeed good - but consider this.

When manufacturing playing cards, almost no companies get the alignment and registration 100% correct.  The back is rarely aligned perfectly with the front with no margin of error.

Now, when the cards are being printed, and later being cut, the printer has to choose which side is the more important of the two to focus on getting closer to perfect.  That side is the back - if the cards are cut off-center, the uneven margins will look bad and for symmetrical backs can even be considered as having a one-way mark.  Legit poker players hate one-way marks because with a little pre-arrangement, one can use that to know something about the cards being dealt to each player.

There are limits, therefore, as to how thin of a margin goes on the back.  Being off by a millimeter is not as easy to spot when a card has a wide-enough margin around the back design, but becomes very easy to spot when dealing with thin margins.

So, it's established that the back ends up being the more important of the two for correct alignment.  This means that if you don't allow for enough of a margin or blank space around the face, including the index, you may find portions of your indices ending up on the wrong cards in the wrong places.  This is not to say that you shouldn't put them near the cut line, but there's near and there's NEAR.  Yours are mostly NEAR - and some aren't so near because the alignment of your indices varies from card to card, a no-no in functional playing card design.

I'm very familiar with the term "Japanamation" - a term that's NEVER used in Japan.  I also remember the old VHS tapes that cost $30 for two episodes - some entire series are that much these days and on higher-quality formats.  Perhaps for you manga wasn't the norm, but for many, it was - especially the older manga that had broad appeal and from which an anime movie or TV show was created.  The manga format didn't explode in the US until the '90s and the '00s, but the same can be said of anime becoming closer to mainstream.  There are still many in the US who think of animation and comics as a children's medium, while in Japanese society nothing could be further from the truth.

I'm simply pointing out that anime is an animated art form seen in films and on television while manga is the still art you're creating.  Perhaps if it was a drawing of an anime character, then I could understand calling it anime as well, but it's not - none of your characters have appeared in any animation anywhere; they're of your own creation.  It's like calling a painting a statue or calling a car wheel an anti-matter hyperdrive.  Then again, many people in the US, especially non-collectors of either art form, would make exactly the same mistake, so if you want to keep the error in, go ahead.  It doesn't make it any less of an error, but as long as you make money from it, who cares?

If you're going to be an artist, know your art form.

BTW: you can attach up to FIVE images to a single post, not just one.  Combining them makes for easier reading and less wasted space.

I like the improvements I've seen to this deck. I think the pips and courts are looking much better now, I just can't get on board with the card back or tuckbox so i'm still not pledging on this just yet. There's just too much good competition around at the moment.

The artwork is great though, It's just a shame the full package isn't coming together in my opinion.

No one here expects perfection, especially on one's first deck design.  A desire to improve is good, as is taking other people's suggestions and ideas into account.

Ok I am working on tuck box.. I tried posting pics early this morning but my files where to big... I Have changed the card back and evened out the indices. I also remade the indices and spaced them a little further from the edge. Indices Are all correct color and easier to understand. Once again I would like to thank you guys for your input. I made a deck of cards you guys help me make it better.

Why is the art for the court cards inconsistent in both style and scale?

The indices are improved but are still a bit too baroque.  Indices should be simple and easily read.

That is the great thing about anime any thing goes. Machines being powered by souls or dolls created for battle lets not forget black-hole high school hero that time travels every time he is kissed.. I really do not see any rules. Some of the cards are scaled do to art. I just started creating drawings so scaled may ruin the art. Next time I will keep this in mind. The only Indices that are scaled different are the kings. Thanks once again for your input.

I didn't say that the indices were off-scale - I was referring to the ART.  The indices are simply hard to read.  But hey, it's your artistic vision; I'm just a playing card design consultant with a handful of successful clients, so what do I know, right...?  I'll get out of your hair - have fun raising your goal funds!  I mean you're already at 7% eleven days in - you should have NO problem making the remaining 93% in the next 19 days with one hand tied behind your back!

You know if I created my deck the way you wanted and made my goal that would be great for you.. People pay me to do their vision... This is something created and put on kickstarter... My first and if it does not reach its goal that's fine... It's my time money and energy my art. It's simply art. I have had allot of views, cancellation, advice so I feel like my time has been spent well. My kick starter is slow but I am still here changing stuff around and updating backers creating new art for the tuck. I am sure if I paid you for your skills you would give me direct line of direction. Do not get me wrong the free advice you have given to me well be re-read over and over again... So thanks.

@alexanderliss - To me, you took a step backward; Your deck is no longer functional.  That is the key.  After the deck is functional, you can do whatever you want artistic-wise.  I don't think you know all the rules yet.  I see you have lots of energy and ambition, but this doesn't work.  NOw you can break some of the rules and make it work.  I've seen it, but you can't break all the rules and make it work.  Stick around and read older posts and you will see the light.  Thanks once again for your input...
