  • Pick a card, any card...no, not THAT card!

Wow - this is what the world needs now.  A patriotic, American deck, made by...a Canadian?

Might as well appoint me to make a patriotic Mexican deck...

It's clear to me that he's never designed a deck before - and might not have ever HANDLED one, either.  The card images get skinnier and taller the further down the page you go - it's like a funhouse mirror deck!  Maybe he's trying to disguise that it's really a tarot deck, a poker deck and a bridge deck all rolled into one.

I'm saying just one thing about the art, period.  Beauty is in the eye of a beholder somewhere out there, just not this one.

I'll say about the design however, that it's really not good.  Index fonts MISMATCHED?  They look like they were picked out with the monitor turned off at the time.  The pips are a train wreck - why must so many people reinvent the pips when the old ones were just fine?  They're trying too hard to be unique, and in the process end up with something so unique, it's ugly.  Pips should be simple, especially in the indices.

On the "Would my poker buddies use this deck?" scale, this rates two trash cans - they'd tear the deck in half and separate the halves to keep it from coming back from the dead.

I'm not usually so vociferously negative about any deck, but this one is just - I can't go on.  My head hurts when I think of it.  I'm sorry if the designer reads this and takes offense, but YOUR DECK NEEDS HELP LIKE I NEED AIR.

Taken down and re-launched

The new design puts the courts inside of frames.  But Franklin Roosevelt is still pictured as Teddy.  Lincoln is still drawn with an eraser.  And I'm still not pledging.

The designer *does* tell a story about how he, a Canadian, came to design a deck intended to focus on American history.

He dropped the Bicycle brand, so there's that.  But everything else art-wise is exactly the same.  "Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results."  The quote is often attributed, incorrectly, to both Albert Einstein and Benjamin Franklin.  Regardless, I think it applies here.

Noticed the tuck box template - it's not a USPC print job.  Or it is and the designer doesn't have a clue.  That is the template used by EPCC and LPCC, however.  His goal is about half as large as the previous attempt.  Even so, that previous attempt only earned C$219 before he pulled the plug on it.

His "inspiration" comes from his sister marrying an American who moves the family back to Canada when he retires from the Navy, starts a neighborhood poker game and he wanted to make a deck to make them feel "more at home"?  Yeah, that and four quarters still only adds up to a dollar!  There are already many patriotic decks out there, including a US Navy deck featuring non-com and officer ranks on the cards.  Yet another example of someone trying to reinvent the wheel using mayonnaise and peanut butter...  If you can't invent a better wheel, just use the one that's already there!  For less than ten bucks, he could save himself a lot of time and trouble and just buy something like "America Playing Cards" from USPC...

This deck still rates the same on the "Would my poker buddies use this deck?" scale - two trash cans.  They'd tear the deck in half and toss each half into a separate can to prevent them from regenerating.
