New Card Design from Jeff Perryman

Hi all,
I am new here; I was chatting on another thread about a set of cards I had already created and is currently going through the KickStarter funding phase.
After hearing some feedback about my designs, I got an idea for a completely different style of card. So I created a quick mock up today and, as promised, I am posting them here for thoughts, ideas, and general feedback.

This has a unique and interesting look to it, but I have to ask - why the gears?  It looks like you're taking a modern, avant-garde design and trying to shoehorn a steampunk/gearpunk aesthetic into it.  Drop the gears - the design truly doesn't need them.  I think it would be a marked improvement to leave them out.

Of course, I haven't yet seen the courts, the back design, the jokers or the tuck...

One gear does not a Steampunk deck make. I like the gears, but it doesn't seem to be finished enough to be Steampunk for my tastes.

@Jeff - Since you have the rank of the card in the pips have you thought of maybe just incorporating it into the standard layout of the pips. It would be less cluttered and leave more room for your art.

To me, that's what makes this deck appealing - the way his pips are laid out, with the color reversals going from corner to corner.  I wouldn't change that.  The small pip size in the body of the spot cards has a certain charm as well - there have been many popular decks that use a smaller pip design.
