Presenting The Inventors Playing Cards

December 22, 2014  /  Jody Eklund

Two completely custom illustrated decks of the men and women who changed the way we lived, or changed the way men died.

Inspiration

A few months ago I watched a documentary on the History channel called, "The Men Who Built America". In that documentary the stories of John D. Rockefeller, Cornelius Vanderbilt, Andrew Carnegie, Henry Ford and J.P. Morgan were told. I was glued to the TV...I was hooked. Their stories were inspiring and I was struck by the spirit and ingenuity they showed.   I decided that I should do a series of playing cards that celebrated the spirit that these kind of men demonstrated. The Inventors series was born.

Now, not everyone will be an inventor. I decided to do my first two decks in the series about Innovators and Devastators. Men and Women who were either innovators that changed the world on a global scale or those that changed the battlefields of war.

So, I hope you will allow me to tell you the stories about these men and women through pictures as well as words. I will be Illustrating two decks along with a booklet. These will be the first two decks in the inventors series. I hope their stories will be an inspiration to you as well.

Updates will be posted in these places starting January 5, 2015:

  • Pick a card, any card...no, not THAT card!

Those two decks aren't quite gelling for me as a theme.  More like two separate themes, despite some similarity/overlap.  I'll wait until I see the cards.

I really like the look of these decks!

I like trains, boats, and tanks... and so I'm delighted that an incredible designer like Jody has created decks which feature two of those three :D

The artwork for the Golden Spike cards totally blew my mind. Therefore, my expectations for these two new decks are sky high.

For me the question will be who Jody is printing the decks with.
With this signature I'm following the example set by Fes: There is only ONE letter L in my display name. "Holly" is a female name... and I'm a bearded guy who's into weightlifting. There's nothing feminine about me brother!

That's one of the details he's let us in on so far. He's printing those with USPCC.

I can see the theme. Good inventions vs. bad inventions.  I can see the AOS on the Devastation deck being the A Bomb.  The AOS on innovations maybe fire or electricity??

Thanks for the heads up Fes. I had signed up for the Black Ink newsletter, but I wasn't checking the Black Ink site regularly... and so I missed the info regarding the printer.

I gotta admit, I was really looking forward to getting the deck... but seeing as it's USPCC, I'm going to have to pass due to their usual issues.

Some more information on this series. Jody is going with the Innovation deck solo. The Devistation deck will be another thing all together that we're likely to see later this year. The Innovation decks will be printed by LPCC and will be two decks, Limited and Standard. The Limited Edition is slated to have a sleeve and collectors box!

Aha! Seeing as Jody isn't printing with USPCC, I'm excited about this project once again!

I'm definitely back on board for this one. Jody's artwork is incredible, and I like the themes that he's chosen till date. This is a "must have" for me :D

Hey, HolyJJ:

You may have mentioned this on other threads, so please pardon me if I'm asking you to repeat yourself. I know that USPCC can jerk around their customers with regard to reneging, delivering late, delivering costly overages, etc., but is there an issue with the quality of their finished product that has you refusing to buy a deck that they manufactured? Just curious.

There are no 3's in rousselle. There are, however, two s's, two l's, two e's (but not in a row), an r, an o, and a u.

Hello Rousselle!

I guess my posts may give the impression that I'm a USPCC "hater"... but in all honesty, that really isn't the case.

When I first started collecting, my goal was to own the best quality cards in existence.‎ At the time, USPCC was the only real option (LPCC and EPCC weren't around)... and so my collection at that time was dominated by USPCC decks. As their was nothing to really compare against, I did consider USPCC to be the gold standard... but even then, I was finding that the newer USPCC decks were using card stocks which really weren't as good as what they were previously using.

Eg. the Mana V1, and Zenneth Kok's gold seal New Fan Back decks both used a really nice card stock which USPCC no longer offers. Even the old Wynn decks had a nice card stock.

The phasing out of good quality materials did start to bother me, and I did start losing interest... but then Legends came along, and my interest in playing cards took a turn for the better.

Over time, the more I compared the LPCC ‎and USPCC products, the less impressed I became with our friends in Kentucky. The obvious things that stand out:

(1) Printing precision: USPCC have been around for donkeys years... and so how can they justify *not* being able to get print registration perfect, where as Legends can with printers in Taiwan and PRC?

I'm very much into doing gambling demos (the type Richard Turner and Darwin Ortiz do), and so I like to tell people at the start "these cards are just normal cards, and they're not marked or gaffed in any way"... yet 95% of all USPCC cards are unintentionally one-way, due to uneven borders!

(2) Cutting: LPCC and EPCC decks are boasting perfectly smooth edges due to a superior cutting system which they're using... where as USPCC still have somewhat "furry" edges. For a guy like me who's main use for cards is routines involving shuffling, it makes a big difference.

(3) Durability: LPCC and EPCC cards last a heck of a long time -- some decks have lasted me 5 times as long as USPCC decks.‎ Even with the new card stock that USPCC started offering last year, it cannot compete in terms of durability. I used a deck of Madison Private Reserve Rounders, and after just a few uses, the edges had dents in them. It was basically ready for the trash can.

And so quality wise, I just don't feel that USPCC decks can compete. Yeah, they have the custom of casinos, so good for them... but as a collector, I'm not impressed. If the quality isn't the best available, then I'm not going to part with my money just because a tuck box has "Bicycle" or "Bee" stamped across it.

As it is, I wasn't too big a fan of the magic finish (which appears to be USPCC's top of the line coating) -- cards would just fly everywhere if I attempted to shuffle out of the box. It also made bottom dealing ‎tough for me. The coating that Legends use works great for me -- great slip between the cards, and at the same time, allows me to easily grip cards for extraction.

I like good artwork on cards... but I like to make use of them also, and hence why I'm not really able to do very much with USPCC decks.

Jody's artwork, as I already expressed, is awesome -- the Golden Spike design was really cool. That's why I'm really happy that I'll be able to add these upcoming decks to my collection. Great quality artwork, and great quality printing/materials -- for me, that's everything that I'm looking for :D

Hope that answers the question!‎

Too bad the Joker doesn't have a cave people inventing cooking. Probably the single greatest invention the world has ever seen, Cooking noms.

Btw, I hope Andrew Dougherty is on one of those court carts.

I'm in for the mixed brick.

Delighted to say that this one looks pretty much certain to be funded. A very healthy volume of pledges in just 2 days, and just 4k left for the funding target to be met.

I like the look of the white edition deck... and so I think I'll add one on before the campaign is over. Right then, I'd better start selling off the remainder of my USPCC decks!

I spoke to Jody recently about Innovation and also about his other projects that he has worked on. I really liked golden spike because of the history and research that went into the deck, and it seems that Innovation is no exception. If you're interested in Jody's work take some time to see what he had to say when we spoke.
