Scopa Scuro: Dark-Themed Italian Playing Cards

***PROJECT NAME HAS CHANGED TO "SCOPA OSCURA". READ UPDATE #3 FOR MORE INFORMATION***

Long before there were spades, hearts, diamonds, and clubs, playing cards had very different suits. Mandrake Playing Card Company is bringing those suits back to life with the new Scopa Oscura deck. Incorporating a new, minimalist design with the images from the Napoletane Italian playing cards, Scopa Scuro is an updated look for a centuries old tradition.

Last night I stayed up late playing poker with Tarot cards. I got a full house and four people died.

Let me guess - "scopa" is a feminine noun while "scuro" is a male adjective?

Kinda funny - Google Translate displays the same definition for both of the titles you've chosen: "dark broom!"

I played this growing up, I remember the deck being a lot more colourful, I don't see a "Scopa" deck that lives up to my memories. I am not sure how I feel about the "minimalist" black and white yet.

The concept is pretty much the same as when the first black decks were coming out, like the Bicycle Black Tiger, Bicycle Shadowmasters and Tally-Ho Viper.  It didn't take long for a lot of people to follow suit, since those decks were selling like hotcakes when they first came out.

He's making what is probably the first Italian-suited black deck on the market.  It's less about minimalism, more about black.  The back was a more complicated design, but it rendered the cards one-way so he simplified it a bit.

Right. As my first deck I wanted to go with something easy and also something that I knew people had an interest in. Black decks are collectible and people seem to like the look (I know I do).

Haha! Well, there's a bit more back story to it than just the genders. It turns out that the word "scopa" has become somewhat of a sexual slang word. I posted about my project on the Italy sub-reddit and some people there told me that it could have a second meaning that I don't know about. I won't go into too much detail here. Scopa Oscura sounds better in Italian, I've been told, and also holds the same meaning that I wanted.

As for the word "scopa" it means broom or sweep. One of the ways you can get points in the game is by "sweeping" the table clean of all the cards by matching them with one from your hand.

Consider "Scopa Ombra."  Ombra is talian for "shade" - I wear a Borsalino Ombra fedora in my profile photo.  Widest brim they make, 3 inches (about 7.6 cm).  I figured you might like the sound better.

BTW: what happened to the idea of keeping it a two-way back?

It's still a two-way back. Are you talking about the one in the video? If so, I accidentally sent the wrong graphic for backs to MPC. The final product will have the correct one, the last one I showed on the other thread.

The guys at The Spiel mentioned Scopa Oscura on this week's show! They had kickstarted a deck of scopa cards previously and so they were eager to talk about it and mention it to their listeners. If you are interested you can listen here.
